Key Note Speaker
Richard Goldsand
Feldenkrais and Tensegrity
Richard’s presentation takes a deep dive into the structural model of tensegrity and why it’s important for healthy movement.
Tensegrity – or tensile integrity – is a type of structural model that relies on the continuous balance of tension and compression within an interconnected structure. If you pull or strain one part, you create a push on another part and vice versa. If there is no push, you won’t have the pull.
The body is an interconnected system that operates as a tensegrity model.
This means to experience easy and harmonious movement, we need to create equal and opposite push/pull or tension/compression within the body. When the body overworks or underworks too much or too little (or not at all), the structural integrity is thrown out of balance.
Using easy-to-follow visual aids, Richard will show why it’s the intersection of these opposing push/pull movements that are important for us to gain clarity, coordination and choice in our everyday movements.
Richard BIO
For those of us who have fallen in love with the Feldenkrais Method and its work, sometimes it’s hard to understand how come people don’t get “it“. Our work can seem magical, and mysterious, or sometimes I/we didn’t understand “how “ this miraculous experience just happened. The intersection of the Feldenkrais Method and the Tensegrity model I believe allows us to have a more accurate internal experience which allows us to explain some of these moments.
Rich has worked successfully with artistic performers, high-achieving athletes, individuals wishing to combat everyday stressors of life, and medical professionals seeking complementary therapies for clients.
Since 2000 Rich has taught the Feldenkrais Method in the ASU Dance Department and has served as Feldenkrais Educational consultant for various ASU Athletic teams including men’s baseball, football, and women’s basketball. He also trained members of the US Olympic Diving Team and in his private practice he has worked with prominent professional athletes.
Rich has been sharing his work for the past 30 years, from his private practice to his own Feldenkrais/Tensegrity workshops in Germany, Austria ,Japan and Australia, to assisting in Feldenkrais Training Programs worldwide.
Rich Goldsand was trained in Marin County, California. Rich was first introduced to the Feldenkrais® Method in 1988 through his oldest daughter who was receiving lessons for her own movement difficulties. He began his studies of mind/body perspectives and human potential when he became certified in the Feldenkrais Method® In 1994.

I hand it to you
Hands have been called the outer brain, and even more intelligent than the brain! Hands are often the first point of contact with the environment, and moving our hands can be a primary way of communicating. Yet not all of us have full capacity, or they can get tired, or injured, and if so how can we improve the functionality of our hands, and arms so we can access them to best make our way through the world in the ways we wish. We will explore the quality, function and meaning of touch and the meaning and culture of gesture.
Movement Lesson: Surgeon’s Hands
When Moshe Feldenkrais attended eye surgery he was unhappy with the quality of touch from the surgeons. So he taught them how to refine their actions so the hands could be more responsive and kind. We will explore the quality of touch and how this impacts on our brains.
Margaret Kaye - BIO
At the age of 23 Margaret was told she could never work again. Due to the Occupational Overuse injury she was unable to work for several years. Until she discovered the Feldenkrais Method of Movement could enable her to learn how to change her embodied patterns. This is now a speciality area, amongst others. Margaret also specialises in working with performers, such as actors, musicians and athletes.
